Easy Canvas Painting Ideas for Beginners

Five simple beginner canvases: a sunset, a tree, a flower, a wave, and a leaf

Beginner canvas ideas fail when they are really intermediate ideas with the word easy in the title. A first canvas needs a background, one subject, and a place to stop. These five are that, and nothing more.

Sunset, tree, flower

The sunset is bands of colour. The tree is a trunk and a dabbed crown. The flower is a centre and petals. Full theme notes are in the two-hour themes guide. If you only teach one of them, teach the sunset. It is the hardest to ruin.

Wave

A blue lower half, a lighter blue curl, and a white line along the top of the curl. The sky is the upper half in a pale colour. One wave, not a seascape. This pairs well with the summer guide.

Leaf

One leaf, one vein, a plain background. Change the colour for the season. It is the smallest idea on the list and a good warm-up before a sunflower or a pumpkin.

Use acrylics so the painting can go home the same night. Oils stay wet too long for a party.
