Sunflower Paint Night: An Easy Canvas

A sunflower is the beginner canvas people already know how to see. The centre is a circle. The petals are strokes that touch that circle. If those two things are true, it reads as a sunflower even when the petals are uneven.
Order of painting
Paint the background first in a soft blue or warm cream and let it sit. Then the brown centre, slightly above the middle so there is room for a stem. Petals are pulled from the centre outward with a flat brush. The stem and two leaves go on last.
Use two yellows if you have them, one for the base of the petal and one for the tip. One yellow still works.
Mistakes that are easy to fix
Petals that look like a fringe got too thin. Load the brush and make fewer, wider strokes. A centre that looks flat needs a few darker dots, not a new drawing. A stem that is too thin can be painted over once.
When to use this theme
Sunflowers carry a fall night, a late summer night, a birthday in yellow, and a girls' night that wants something obvious and cheerful. It is the same project in every case. Only the background colour changes.
Host your own paint night at The Imagination Hive in Milton, Ontario.
