Crafts for Classrooms

Matching paper crafts lined up on a classroom table

Classroom crafts have to work for a whole group, with one set of supplies and a finish line before the bell. These projects use the same materials for every child, need little drying time, and still leave room for each child to choose colours. Prep the pieces before the lesson.

Same-strip collage

Ages: 5–8. Time: 25 minutes.

You need: a handful of paper strips per child, glue sticks, one base sheet.

  1. Give every child the same number of strips.
  2. They arrange, then glue.
  3. Ask them to point to a pattern they made.
  4. Collect them flat.

Pre-cut strips save the lesson from becoming a cutting class.

Class paper chain

Ages: 5–8. Time: 20 minutes.

You need: two strips per child, glue sticks.

  1. Each child makes two loops.
  2. Join the loops into one chain.
  3. Hang it the same day.
  4. Count the loops together.

Two loops each is fair and still makes a long chain.

Initial portrait

Ages: 6–8. Time: 25 minutes.

You need: paper, pencil, crayon.

  1. Write the child's initial very large.
  2. They turn the letter into a character with a face, arms, and shoes.
  3. Colour the background one colour.
  4. Share one sentence about the character.

A giant letter gives every child a starting shape.

Window colour sort

Ages: 5–7. Time: 20 minutes.

You need: tissue squares, contact paper, tape.

  1. Tape contact paper to a window.
  2. Children add squares, saying the colour as they stick it.
  3. Group colours if you want a math link.
  4. Leave it up for the week.

Standing at the window spreads the group out.
