Paper Crafts for Kids

Paper chains, fans, and folded animals on a craft table

Paper is the most useful craft supply in the house. These paper crafts for kids use folding, looping, and cutting, with no special kit. Construction paper, printer paper, a glue stick, and scissors are enough.

Paper chain

Ages: 4+. Time: 15 minutes.

You need: paper strips, glue stick.

  1. Cut strips about 3 cm wide.
  2. Glue the first strip into a loop.
  3. Thread the next strip through the loop and glue it.
  4. Repeat until the chain is as long as you want.

A chain is a good first cutting project because the strips are wide.

Paper fan

Ages: 5+. Time: 10 minutes.

You need: a rectangle of paper, a paper clip or tape.

  1. Fold the short edge over about 2 cm.
  2. Flip and fold back the other way.
  3. Keep accordion-folding to the end.
  4. Pinch one end and tape or clip it.

Crease each fold with a fingernail so the fan opens evenly.

Corner bookmark

Ages: 7+. Time: 15 minutes.

You need: a square of paper, marker.

  1. Fold the square in half into a triangle.
  2. Fold the left and right points toward the top.
  3. Tuck one flap into the pocket the other fold made.
  4. Draw a face on the point that sticks up.

Slide the bookmark over the corner of a page to test it.

Standing paper tulip

Ages: 6+. Time: 20 minutes.

You need: paper, a green strip, glue, scissors.

  1. Cut a flower shape with a short tab at the bottom.
  2. Fold the tab back so the flower stands.
  3. Glue a stem strip to the tab.
  4. Add one leaf.

The fold, not the glue, is what makes it stand.
