Crafts for Ages 9–10

Nines and tens want a result that looks intentional. These crafts still use household paper and cardboard, but the steps include measuring, layering, and a design choice. Give them the plan and let them change colours and details.
Layered paper landscape
Ages: 9–10. Time: 40 minutes.
You need: three sheets of paper, scissors, glue, pencil.
- Cut a far hill, a near hill, and a foreground strip.
- Stack them from light in the back to dark in the front.
- Add one object: a tree, a house, or a boat.
- Glue only the bottom edge of each layer so the paper lifts a little.
Leaving a small gap between layers makes the picture feel deeper.
Folded fox
Ages: 9–10. Time: 25 minutes.
You need: a square of paper, marker.
- Fold the square in half into a triangle.
- Fold the two side points in to make ears.
- Fold a small tip up for the nose.
- Draw eyes and an ear line.
Use a 15 cm square. Smaller paper is fiddly.
Cardboard bookmark press
Ages: 9–10. Time: 30 minutes.
You need: cereal-box cardboard, paper, glue, markers.
- Cut two matching rectangles.
- Draw a border and a small picture on paper and glue it to one rectangle.
- Glue the second rectangle behind it.
- Punch a hole and add yarn if you have it.
Two layers stop the bookmark from curling.
Pattern grid
Ages: 9–10. Time: 30 minutes.
You need: paper, ruler, markers.
- Draw a grid of 16 boxes with a ruler.
- Pick three colours and one rule, such as stripes, dots, checks.
- Fill each box with a different mix of the rule.
- Stop at 16. A full grid is the finished piece.
The ruler is the new skill. Hold it with a spare finger so it does not slide.
