Cereal Box Crafts

Cereal box crafts use a thin box that is easy to cut and already has a printed outside. Turn it inside out when you want a plain surface. The recycled guide's bookmark uses cereal-box cardboard for older children. These projects are frames, puppets, and a simple ramp that a younger child can help build.
Set up the table
Empty the box, wipe crumbs, and flatten it if you need sheets. An adult cuts. The printed side can stay if they like the colours, but cover words with paper if you do not want a brand in the middle of the picture.
Puppet
Ages: 5+. Time: 25 minutes.
You need: a cereal box, scissors, markers, scrap paper.
- An adult cuts a mouth opening or leaves the top flap as a mouth.
- They draw eyes.
- Add paper teeth or a tongue.
- A hand goes inside to make it talk.
The box is sturdier than a paper bag, so the puppet keeps its shape.
Frame
Ages: 6+. Time: 25 minutes.
You need: a flattened box, a window cut by an adult, a drawing, tape.
- Cut a window smaller than the drawing.
- Tape the drawing behind the window.
- Decorate the border.
- Add a stand or hang it.
The border is the craft. The drawing can be one they already made.
Slot ramp
Ages: 6+. Time: 30 minutes.
You need: a long side of the box, a marble or a large bead, tape, books.
- Fold up the long edges so the marble cannot fall off.
- Tape the folds.
- Prop one end on books.
- Roll the marble.
Large beads only, and only with children who will not put them in their mouths. A pom-pom also rolls.
Wallet
Ages: 7+. Time: 25 minutes.
You need: a rectangle of cereal-box card, tape, paper money they draw.
- Fold the card into three.
- Tape the sides of the middle fold to make a pocket.
- They draw a few bills.
- The wallet closes over the pocket.
This is a good project for the ages 6 to 8 group who want something to use.
Robot body
Ages: 5+. Time: 20 minutes.
You need: the whole box, tube arms, tape, markers.
- The box is the body.
- Tape tubes on as arms.
- Draw a face on the front.
- It can stand on the table.
Do not add a head that makes it top-heavy unless you tape it well.
Stencil
Ages: 7+. Time: 20 minutes.
You need: a flat piece of the box, a simple shape cut out, crayon, paper.
- An adult cuts one shape out of the card.
- They hold the stencil on paper.
- Colour over the hole.
- Move it and repeat.
A simple shape, heart or star or circle, prints more clearly than a detailed one.
What to watch
Thin cardboard cuts more easily than a shipping box, and the edge is still sharp. Tape the edge they will hold. Marbles and beads are not for toddlers.
