Toddler Art Projects
A toddler art table with chunky crayons, paper, and a collage

Toddler art projects are short, large, and finished even when the child only does one step. The point is the motion: scribble, stick, tear, press. A recognisable picture can wait. This guide sorts the projects by age and by how much mess you can handle today.

Tape paper down. Offer one tool. Sit nearby. Name what they do, not whether it looks right. The articles below have the full steps. If you only have a few minutes, start with the age that matches the child.

Art for 2-Year-Olds

Big paper, one crayon, and stickers. No scissors and no small pieces.

Art for 3-Year-Olds

Tearing, gluing, and one-colour paint. Pairs with the easy crafts already written for this age.

Art for 4-Year-Olds

Shapes, a plan of two steps, and a picture someone else can name.

Finger Painting

How to set up washable paint so the print is the project and the cleanup is planned.

Process Art

Art that is about the making. The page can be all marks and still be done.

Mess-Free Art

Stickers, crayons, and a glue stick for days when paint is the wrong choice.

Start with one

Tape a page and one crayon

Ages: 2–4. Time: 10 minutes.

You need: large paper, painter's tape, one chunky crayon.

  1. Tape the paper on all four sides.
  2. Hand over one crayon.
  3. Let them mark until they stop.
  4. Peel the tape and write their name in the corner.

One tool is the whole plan. A second colour can wait for another day.

What to watch

Under three, skip beads, dry rice, buttons, and anything that fits in a mouth. An adult stays at the table. Stop when they leave, even if you wanted one more step.

The Imagination Hive is a children's art and STEM studio in Milton, Ontario. Pick one project, set out only those materials, and stop when the last step is done.
