Art for 4-Year-Olds

Paper shapes, a sponge, and a drawing with thick lines

Art for 4-year-olds can hold a small plan. They can choose a subject, place shapes, and tell a sentence about the page. Scissors are still an adult tool when the cut is small, but they can snip a fringe. Preschool crafts in the first guide cover houses and yarn names. These projects are about picture-making.

Set up the table

Ask what they want to make before you set out scraps, then set out only the pieces that idea needs. A pile of every colour is a sorting game, not a picture.

Shape picture

Ages: 4. Time: 25 minutes.

You need: pre-cut circles, squares, and triangles, glue stick, paper, crayon.

  1. They choose a subject: person, car, animal, house.
  2. They place shapes before glue.
  3. Glue them down.
  4. Add crayon details: a road, a smile, a sun.

Placing before gluing saves a crumpled restart.

Sponge garden

Ages: 4. Time: 20 minutes.

You need: sponge shapes, two paint colours, paper.

  1. Show one press and a lift.
  2. They fill the page.
  3. Green can be grass if they say so.
  4. Count the prints if they like counting.

Two colours are plenty. A third cup slows the printing.

Self-portrait with a mirror

Ages: 4. Time: 20 minutes.

You need: a mirror, paper, crayon.

  1. Look in the mirror together.
  2. Name one thing: hair, glasses, a shirt colour.
  3. They draw a big head and that one thing.
  4. You can draw a body outline only if they ask.

One true detail matters more than a matched face.

Story strip

Ages: 4. Time: 25 minutes.

You need: paper folded into three boxes, crayon.

  1. Box one is the start.
  2. Box two is something that happens.
  3. Box three is the end.
  4. They tell the story, you can write a few words under each box.

Three boxes keep the story short enough to finish.

Printed letters

Ages: 4–5. Time: 20 minutes.

You need: their name written large, dot markers or a cotton ball and paint.

  1. Write the name in big letters.
  2. They dot along the lines.
  3. The letters can still be yours. The dots are theirs.
  4. Do not require the dots to stay perfectly on the line.

This is name practice without a worksheet.

Collage pet

Ages: 4. Time: 25 minutes.

You need: an oval of paper, scraps, glue, crayon.

  1. Decide the animal first.
  2. Glue ears and a tail.
  3. Draw the face.
  4. Give it a name.

The oval does the body work. They do the parts that make it specific.

What to watch

Four-year-olds compare. If a sibling's picture is nearby, they may quit. Give each child their own page and put finished work out of sight until both are done.

The Imagination Hive is a children’s art and STEM studio in Milton, Ontario. These projects use ordinary supplies so you can start at the kitchen table.
