Crafts for Ages 6–8

Children weaving paper and building a cardboard craft

Ages 6 to 8 can follow a longer plan, use scissors with care, and fix a mistake. These crafts add weaving, folding, and simple building. Offer the steps, then step back. Help when they ask, not at the first wobble.

Paper weave mat

Ages: 6–8. Time: 30 minutes.

You need: two colours of paper, scissors, glue.

  1. Fold one sheet in half and cut slits from the fold, stopping before the edge.
  2. Unfold it. This is the loom.
  3. Cut the second sheet into strips.
  4. Weave over and under, then glue the ends.

If a slit tears through, tape the back and keep going.

Cardboard-tube robot

Ages: 6–8. Time: 30 minutes.

You need: toilet-paper tubes, box scraps, tape, markers.

  1. Stack two tubes and tape them.
  2. Add box feet and tube arms.
  3. Draw a face and buttons.
  4. Name one thing the robot can do.

Tape beats glue here. Glue slips while they are still building.

Accordion animal

Ages: 6–8. Time: 25 minutes.

You need: a long paper strip, scrap paper, markers.

  1. Fold the strip back and forth into an accordion.
  2. Draw a head and glue it on one end.
  3. Add a tail on the other end.
  4. Open and close the folds so the animal stretches.

Four folds are enough. More folds make the paper too stiff.

Map of a made-up place

Ages: 6–8. Time: 30 minutes.

You need: paper, pencil, markers.

  1. Draw a river or road first.
  2. Add three places: a home, a shop, and a park.
  3. Label them in their own spelling.
  4. Tell a one-minute story about the map.

Spelling can be inventive. The point is planning a picture.
