Crafts for Kindergarten

Kindergarten children making paper crowns

Kindergarten crafts can include a short plan, a cut, and a bit of writing. These projects match the skills children practise at school: scissors, letter shapes, counting, and following a sequence. Rounded scissors and a drawn line to cut along keep it successful.

Paper crown

Ages: 5–6. Time: 25 minutes.

You need: a strip of paper long enough to fit a head, shapes, glue, stapler for the adult.

  1. Fit the strip around the head and mark the overlap.
  2. The child glues shapes along the band.
  3. An adult staples the ends.
  4. They can write their name on the inside.

Measure first. A crown that falls off gets abandoned.

Handprint tree

Ages: 5–6. Time: 20 minutes.

You need: brown crayon, paint, paper.

  1. Draw a trunk and branches.
  2. Paint the palm and fingers.
  3. Press the hand above the branches as leaves.
  4. Count the leaves together.

One handprint is enough. Extra prints turn the tree into a blob.

Count-and-glue caterpillar

Ages: 5–6. Time: 20 minutes.

You need: paper circles numbered 1 to 5, glue, crayon.

  1. Mix the circles up.
  2. Ask them to find 1, then 2, and so on.
  3. Glue the circles in a line.
  4. Add a face on circle 1 and legs with a crayon.

This is a craft and a number-order game.

Cut-on-the-line snake

Ages: 5–6. Time: 15 minutes.

You need: paper, marker, scissors.

  1. Draw a wide wavy line across the page.
  2. The child cuts on the line.
  3. Add an eye at one end.
  4. Tape the snake to a window or folder.

A thick line is kinder than a hairline. Success matters more than a perfect curve.
