Crafts for Preschoolers

Preschoolers can follow two or three steps and like to tell you what they made. These crafts for preschoolers practice tearing, gluing, and choosing colours. An adult still handles scissors when the cut is small. Keep the project on one page so there is a clear finish.
Shape house
Ages: 3–5. Time: 20 minutes.
You need: construction paper, glue stick, pre-cut squares, triangles, and rectangles.
- Put the shapes in three piles.
- Ask which shape could be a house.
- Glue a square, then a triangle roof, then a rectangle door.
- Add windows only if they still want to continue.
Pre-cut the shapes. Choosing and placing is the preschool job.
Yarn name
Ages: 4–5. Time: 20 minutes.
You need: card, pencil, yarn, glue.
- Write their name in large letters.
- Trace the letters with a glue line.
- Press yarn onto the glue.
- Let it dry flat.
Use thick yarn. Thin thread is frustrating for this age.
Paper collage pet
Ages: 3–5. Time: 20 minutes.
You need: a large oval of paper, scraps, glue stick, crayon.
- Decide if the pet is a cat, dog, or creature.
- Glue on ears and a tail from scraps.
- Draw eyes, a nose, and whiskers.
- Give the pet a name and one sentence about it.
The sentence is the language part of the craft. Write their words on the back.
Sponge-print garden
Ages: 3–5. Time: 15 minutes.
You need: kitchen sponge, washable paint, paper.
- Cut the sponge into a simple flower shape.
- Pour a thin puddle of paint on a plate.
- Show one press, then lift.
- Let them fill the page with prints.
Too much paint makes a smear. A thin layer prints a clearer shape.
