Toddler Sensory Bins

A toddler bin of large pasta with wooden spoons and cups

Toddler sensory bins have to be boring to a safety checklist and interesting to a two-year-old. Large pieces, a shallow tray, and an adult on the floor. Skip rice, beads, water beads, dry beans, and anything the size of a snack. The daycare crafts guide is the made-art version of this age. This is the bin version.

Set up the table

Sit them at a low table or on a sheet you can shake outside. Give the bin only when you are staying. Offer one cup. Name the action: pour, fill, dump. Stop while they are still happy if you need to leave the room. A bin cannot be unsupervised.

Big pasta

Ages: 2+. Time: 10 minutes.

You need: large pasta shapes, a tub, one cup.

  1. Shallow layer.
  2. They scoop.
  3. You scoop beside them.
  4. Pasta goes back in a jar they can help hold.

If they taste it, switch to water or cotton. Uncooked pasta is not a snack you want them to chew.

Pom-pom move

Ages: 2+. Time: 10 minutes.

You need: large pom-poms, two bowls.

  1. Move pom-poms from one bowl to the other.
  2. Hands first.
  3. Tongs only if they already like tongs.
  4. Count two or three, not twenty.

Large pom-poms only. Craft-store mini pom-poms are a choking hazard.

Sponge squeeze

Ages: 2+. Time: 10 minutes.

You need: a sponge, a tub with a little water, a cup.

  1. Dip the sponge.
  2. Squeeze it into the cup.
  3. Repeat.
  4. This is the tidiest water play.

A sponge keeps the water in one place better than cups alone.

Fabric pull

Ages: 2+. Time: 10 minutes.

You need: scarves or clean washcloths, a bin or a box.

  1. Stuff the cloths in.
  2. They pull them out.
  3. Stuff them in again.
  4. No small parts.

This is a bin for children who put everything in their mouths.

Ice and cups

Ages: 2+. Time: 10 minutes.

You need: two ice cubes, a cup, a towel.

  1. Move the ice from tub to cup.
  2. Notice it is cold.
  3. When it is slippery, you hold the cup.
  4. Melt the rest in the sink.

Two cubes, not a bag. Less ice, less mess, same idea.

Lid rattles

Ages: 2+. Time: 10 minutes.

You need: clean large plastic lids, a box.

  1. Lids are the filler.
  2. They clack them, stack them, drop them in the box.
  3. The sound is the sensory part.
  4. Lids go back in a cupboard.

Large lids only, bigger than their fist.

What to watch

Stay there. A toddler bin is a supervised activity, like the bath. If pieces go in the mouth, change the filler or end the play. Do not add more interesting small pieces to distract them.
