Ocean Sensory Bin

An ocean sensory bin is water play with a theme. A little water, a few animals, and a cup for pouring. It pairs with the ocean paper plate crafts if you want something to make when everyone is dry again. Keep the water shallow. The ocean is the idea, not the volume.
Set up the table
A towel under the tub. Sleeves rolled. Three animals, one cup, one spoon. Blue food colouring is optional and stains, so skip it if the towels are pale. Have the drain plan ready: a sink nearby.
Pour and float
Ages: 2+. Time: 15 minutes.
You need: shallow water, a cup, one boat or a plastic lid.
- Pour water into the cup and back.
- Float the lid.
- Push it.
- That can be the whole ocean.
A lid is a boat. You do not need a toy shop.
Animals in and out
Ages: 3+. Time: 15 minutes.
You need: water, three sea animals, a dry cup.
- Animals start in the water.
- They move them to the dry cup.
- Then back.
- Name where they live.
The dry cup is the land. The story can be that simple.
Wave scoop
Ages: 3+. Time: 10 minutes.
You need: water, a cup.
- Scoop and lift.
- Pour from up high to make a sound.
- Then pour low.
- Compare the sounds.
High pours splash. If the floor is getting wet, pour low only.
Shell sort
Ages: 4+. Time: 15 minutes.
You need: large shells, water, two cups.
- Shells bigger than a fist, or skip this for toddlers.
- Sort smooth and bumpy, or big and small.
- They can be wet.
- Dry them before they go away.
Small shells are a choking hazard. When in doubt, use paper shells.
Iceberg
Ages: 4+. Time: 15 minutes.
You need: one ice cube or a frozen water balloon of ice, water, animals.
- Float the ice.
- Animals go around it.
- Notice it gets smaller.
- End when the ice is annoying, not when it is gone.
A frozen balloon of ice is an adult prep. No balloon pieces in the bin.
Dry ocean
Ages: 2+. Time: 10 minutes.
You need: blue paper in the bottom of a dry tub, paper fish, a cup.
- No water.
- Fish get scooped and poured.
- This is the travel version.
- Paper goes back in an envelope.
Use this when water is the wrong mess.
What to watch
Never leave a child alone with a tub of water, even a shallow one. Dump it when you step away. Dry the floor before someone slips.
The Imagination Hive is a children’s art and STEM studio in Milton, Ontario. These projects use ordinary supplies so you can start at the kitchen table.
