Finger painting is the art project parents postpone because of the mess, then miss because it teaches pressure, mixing, and cause and effect in one sitting. The trick is a small amount of washable paint, paper that is taped down, and a stop time. Prints can be kept. A page of mixed brown is still a finished session.<\/p>\n

Set up the table<\/h2>\n

Cover the table or use the bare table if it wipes clean. Tape the paper on all four sides. Put a spoon of each colour on the paper or on a plate, not a full cup. A bin of soapy water or a damp cloth waits before you start, not after the child is already painted.<\/p>\n

One-colour print<\/h2>\n

Ages:<\/strong> 2+. Time:<\/strong> 10 minutes.<\/p>\n

You need:<\/strong> one washable colour, paper, a cloth.<\/p>\n

  1. One spoon of paint.<\/li>\n
  2. They spread it with fingers.<\/li>\n
  3. Press the palm once if they want a handprint.<\/li>\n
  4. Lift the paper and wipe hands before a second idea starts.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    One colour teaches the feel. Mixing can be a different day.<\/p>\n

    Two-colour mix<\/h2>\n

    Ages:<\/strong> 3+. Time:<\/strong> 15 minutes.<\/p>\n

    You need:<\/strong> two primary colours, paper.<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Dots of each colour, apart.<\/li>\n
    2. They drag one into the other.<\/li>\n
    3. Name the new colour when it appears.<\/li>\n
    4. Stop before the whole page is one mud colour, unless they like the mud.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Yellow and blue, or red and yellow, show a new colour fastest.<\/p>\n

      Handprint tree<\/h2>\n

      Ages:<\/strong> 4+. Time:<\/strong> 15 minutes.<\/p>\n

      You need:<\/strong> brown crayon, green or red paint, paper.<\/p>\n

      1. Draw a trunk first.<\/li>\n
      2. Paint one palm.<\/li>\n
      3. Press it above the trunk.<\/li>\n
      4. One or two prints. More prints hide the tree.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        The crayon trunk stays put. Paint-only trees blob.<\/p>\n

        Finger lines<\/h2>\n

        Ages:<\/strong> 3+. Time:<\/strong> 10 minutes.<\/p>\n

        You need:<\/strong> paint, paper.<\/p>\n

          \n
        1. Show one finger line.<\/li>\n
        2. Ask for dots, then lines, then a spiral if they want.<\/li>\n
        3. The list is a game, not a test.<\/li>\n
        4. They can ignore the list and scrub. That is allowed.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          Naming the mark keeps you talking without taking the brush, because there is no brush.<\/p>\n

          Print on dark paper<\/h2>\n

          Ages:<\/strong> 4+. Time:<\/strong> 10 minutes.<\/p>\n

          You need:<\/strong> black or dark blue paper, one light paint.<\/p>\n

            \n
          1. Light paint on dark paper shows each finger.<\/li>\n
          2. They fill the page.<\/li>\n
          3. Leave a few dark gaps.<\/li>\n
          4. It dries looking more finished than paint on white.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            A little paint goes further on dark paper because you can see it.<\/p>\n

            Card for someone<\/h2>\n

            Ages:<\/strong> 4+. Time:<\/strong> 15 minutes.<\/p>\n

            You need:<\/strong> folded paper, one colour, a marker for the adult.<\/p>\n

              \n
            1. Paint the front with fingers.<\/li>\n
            2. Dry it.<\/li>\n
            3. You write their words inside.<\/li>\n
            4. They deliver it.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

              Waiting for paint to dry is the hard part. Have the inside message ready so the card still goes the same day.<\/p>\n

              What to watch<\/h2>\n

              Washable paint still stains some fabrics. Roll sleeves first. If paint reaches the eyes, rinse with water. Do not use craft acrylics for finger painting. They are harder to wash off skin.<\/p>\n
